Metrology of Sheet Metal Distortion and Effects of Spot-Welding Sequences on Sheet Metal Distortion

Refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW) is an emerging solid-state technology that demonstrates outstanding ability to join aerospace aluminum alloys. The thermomechanical processing of RFSSW may cause variations in the workpiece form distortion. This study aims establish a metrology method for sheet metal distortion with intent investigate effects sequences on approach employs robotic system and least squares measure estimate flatness before after RFSSW. experimentation produces five 10-spot-weld panels different sequences, whereas are based common practice making assemblies. A panel consists two lap-welded sheets where top sheet, 6013-T6 alloy, refill welded onto bottom 2029-T8 alloy. results suggest do have worst has root-mean-square error 0.8 mm as average deviation from ideal flatness.
